Fashion Friday- Lace, Crochet and More

Happy Friday!

It’s about a billion degrees around here (translation: like 95). For some odd reason, my brain blocked out the fact that September (or even October) in California does not equal cool fall weather, and I was actually surprised that it’s been so darn hot. So, if you’re in the same boat as us, and standing outside means baking, ignore any Fashion Friday choices that seem like fall clothing. Just look back at this post at a future date and enjoy them then 🙂

It’s hard to tell from the picture, but these are actually burgundy.

There’s something about this top that I absolutely love. It’s a bit pricey for a t-shirt, but it’s so cute!

So pretty and delicate.

Knit Maxi Dress

So this is neither lace or crochet, but I liked it, so I included it anyways. Just like the burgundy boots.

I like the unexpected lace on the sides of a basic shirt.

I’ve been really into headbands recently and this one is so pretty.

Fashion Friday- How to Wear It

I did something a bit different for today’s Fashion Friday- I chose a handful of pieces, and linked to different outfits that are great inspirations for using similar items. All of the clothing pieces that I chose are very versatile and can be used in a ton of different ways.

Below each picture, there are three links leading to different outfit inspirations, so make sure that you click on all of the links (in pink or blue). Hope you have a great weekend!

Ready to Recline Top

striped tee

Ways to wear it: Casual, Eclectic, Feminine

A striped t-shirt is a great staple that can be used in a ton of different outfits. I love to wear mine with jeans, skirts and shorts.

Black Jeggings

black jeggings

Ways to wear it: With Chambray, Military, Bright

For the longest time, I didn’t own a pair of black jeans because I always thought that I’d have trouble pairing them with the right shirts. Don’t ask me why. I finally got a pair of black jeans a while back, and I absolutely love them. And they do go with everything by the way 😉

Oversized Knit Cardigan

Ways to wear it: Casual, Fancy, Creative Layering

My mom has a “grandpa sweater” that she found in the men’s section of Target. I love to borrow it because it’s a perfect, thickly knit cardigan that is so cozy. I really love these sweaters from Forever 21- especially this olive green one.

Train Station Homecoming Flat

Ways to wear it: All Kinds of Inspiration, Relaxed, Cute

Oxfords are just the best. Often, they end up looking a bit fancier than sneakers, and some (like this Modcloth pair) have fun details and embellishments.

Lifelong Romantic Top

Ways to wear it: Simple, Casual, Neutral

You might not expect a fancy, lace top like this to be a good closet staple, but as I explored, I found a ton of cute ways to style similar tops.

Records Before Breakfast Skirt

records before breakfast skirt

Ways to wear it: Fancy, Layers, Cozy

I love skirts like this- especially in solid colors that are easily worn with printed shirts.

Classic Chambray Shirt

Ways to wear it: Colorful, Feminine, Layered

I couldn’t leave a chambray shirt off this post. Denim shirts are the perfect simple button-down or light-weight jacket over dresses.

Yes, I know that my hair is pink

I’ve been dying my hair for about a year now- mostly it’s been a dark red that eventually fades into a slightly more natural looking orange-ish brown. My  hair was also a more purple red at one point and then most recently, I dyed my hair a bright purple-y pink. It’s way brighter than anything I’d tried before and it’s been an interesting experience, that’s for sure. I expected surprise from my friends, and knew that there would be a few who weren’t a fan of the bright color.

What I wasn’t expecting were the constant (and not very positive) comments from people I didn’t even know. When the first words from a newly introduced stranger are, “Wow. You have very red hair”, it tends to throw me. If someone had really long legs, or had crooked teeth, you wouldn’t dream of commenting on it, especially when you don’t even know the person. But somehow, that doesn’t apply when the unusual feature is on purpose; like dyed hair, or tattoos, or piercings, or unusual clothing decisions. Those sort of choices become free game for discussion, and too often, judgement.

^^^The hair dye I used- Manic Panic’s Hot Hot Pink. Keep an eye out for a post in the near future talking about what I thought of Manic Panic’s dye.

Don’t get me wrong- I’ve had a ton of positive feedback- the majority of the people actually do seem to like my hair. If nothing else, they think it’s fun for a short period of time. In fact, it’s started some interesting conversations with complete strangers who I would have never talked to otherwise. Like the gal at Costco who I talked to for 10 minutes just because she asked about my hair. It seems to be a good ice-breaker 😉 And I really do love to hear people’s thoughts about my hair color- it’s interesting to see the variety of opinions.

The comments and the strange looks I get have begun to open my eyes to how judgmental I myself can be. I see someone who looks a certain way, and I immediately make a snap judgement of their character and personality. I always knew that wasn’t a fair or accurate representation of anyone, but until I was in their shoes, I didn’t realize how annoying it can be. None of the comments I’ve received are downright rude, or mean, but they still hurt- knowing that the only thing someone knows me as is “the girl with the purple hair” is a strange experience.

The qualification of, “You can take her word for it. She’s actually a stand-up person, despite her hair”, was one of the more shocking things I heard in regards to my appearance. It made me realize that every time we do something to our bodies, or wear certain clothing, we are directly influencing how others perceive us.

All in all, I just want to be better about giving people the benefit of the doubt. I need to stop judging people by their appearance, or by their actions. I need to wait until I have more information about a person before I decide what I think of them.

Like I said, having a bright hair color has been interesting. Despite the sometimes negative responses, I’m so glad I did it, and hope that I’ll  to continue to have fun, unnatural hair colors. I wonder what people will think about rainbow hair? 😉

Fanatics MLB Baseball Hat Outfit Challenge

Hey all!

Fanatics is an awesome company that sells all kinds of clothing for fans of basically all sports- football, basketball, Nascar, hockey, soccer, the Olympics, college sports, and, of course, baseball! The best part about Fanatics is that they are the perfect place to start if you’re wanting a great game-day outfit. When building cute game-day style, it can be hard to find a large selection of clothes from your favorite team, so it was a pleasant surprise to see the huge variety of designs that Fanatics carries- there’s truly something for everyone!

Because of their great selection of products, I decided to design a great game-day outfit based around a MLB baseball hat that I picked from their website. I was super excited to design an outfit based around a baseball cap! Even though we don’t watch a whole lot of baseball around here, I absolutely love heading down to PetCo Park in San Diego to watch a Padre’s game once in a while. The atmosphere at PetCo Park is so cool- it’s right in the middle of downtown San Diego, and there are so many fun things to do around there. Another great thing about PetCo is the food- they have such amazing food choices, which just adds to the general fun of a baseball game 🙂

I could totally see myself wearing this outfit to a baseball game- it’s so comfy and cute. Fanatics has a huge variety of baseball hats for whichever team is your favorite- I chose a super cool, two-tone flat-bill Padre’s hat, and built a perfect outfit around that.

I had such a fun time designing my game-day outfit and hope that you enjoyed the finished product! Make sure to check out Fanatics– especially their amazing selection of baseball hats!

Hope you all have a great Monday!

Fashion Friday- Made for Adventure

Happy Friday! Despite how much I love dresses and skirts, I also really love easy clothes- jeans, flannels, sweat-shirts, that kind of thing. So that’s what I chose for this week’s Fashion Friday- comfy clothing that I love. Enjoy!

Foggy Shore Long-Sleeve

In case you hadn’t already figured this out, I have a thing for flannels. They are seriously the best. A great place to get a cheap flannel is in the men’s section of thrift stores- a men’s small is a good fit and so comfortable. This flannel from Tilly’s is adorable though- I saw it in person, and it’s perfect.
Klettersack

This little company from Colorado makes some amazing backpacks and other outdoor gear- their stuff is a bit pricey, but so very cool.
National Parks Pass Top

I bought these comfy jeans from Forever21 a couple of weeks ago. They feel a bit like Aladdin’s pants 😉 so cute and unusual.
Loly in the Sky- Caroline

There’s something about these quirky oxfords that I absolutely love- I smile every time I see them.

Anorak Jacket

This jacket is nearly identical to my favorite jacket that I bought from Tilly’s last fall. It’s a great basic piece and is a perfect weight for our mild California winters.
